Nostalgic tool handles

When my Grandfather passed almost a decade ago, he left me a few tools. These two were in a five gallon bucket of rusty lathe tools and carving chisels. The handle on the skew was broken and the bowl gauge had a few cracks in it. I power sanded the rust off, treated them with a paste wax and turned new handles. The other tools in the set had decent handles so I kept them. I just bought my first lathe a month ago and it was nice to not need to buy tools. And, it keeps my Grandfathers tools from wasting away in a rusty bucket.

Recycled wood – first turning

I just bought a new Shopfox mini lathe. I guess I needed to start small and get a hang of the process. My 11 year old son is just as excited as I am to get his hands on it. (Maybe I am as excited as a kid – I don’t know which). We brainstormed on where to get a hold of some wood. Our neighborhood picks up bulk trash from the sidewalk once a month and he suggested we look there first. We found quite a bit. We cut the wood into small enough blocks with a sawzall and off we went. This was the first one we grabbed and it turned out awesome. The brown spot is a dead branch that was partly consumed by the new growth. It is hollow 3/4 of the way down to hold a bud flower. Once we “finished up with 600” we buffed on a coat of tung oil.
Thanks for all the inspiration Carl!

Elm Box with Mahogany Inlay

A large Elm Box with two Mahogany Inlay rings, it was a joy to make and has opened up a whole new avenue of ideas for me to try in later projects

Off-Centric Goblet

This is my third attempt at off-center turning. The piece is oak, and has only had a wipe with boiled linseed oil because I forgot to sand and finish each section as I was turning them.
