Maple Burl Coffee Table

I made this coffee table from a maple tree I have had me eye on for a couple of years that was between some railroad and state highway right of way near my home in Clinton IL. I asked the supervisor for I.D..O.T. that when they cut the tree down, because it had died, if I could have the log. He called me a couple of days later and said it was down for me to come and get. It was like opening a present on Christmas morning when I started to saw it on my band mill. The log shows burl grain clear thr0ugh the log.
The table is about 60 inches long X 22inches wide at the widest part and 2 inches thick. I chose to make slab legs for it also to show off more of the beautiful grain of the burl. The joinery is just simple mortise and tennon. The iron spreader was made for me by my brother who is a blacksmith by trade and hobby. This piece went to a very good friend of mine as a thank you gift. Thanks for letting me share.

Shaker Table, ca 1820

The original version of this table was made in a Shaker village in New York State in about 1820. It is quite unusual, especially the shape of the legs (there are many tables like this, usually said to be candle stands; most of the legs are ogee shaped; this shape is, however really beautiful). Made from urban cherry retrieved from waste trees. Lots of flatwork, and lots of turning. Trickiest part is the manually cut dovetails where the legs fit into the central stem. Finished with a few coats of linseed oil. About three weeks. I’m planning to do another with nicer dovetail joints!

Black Walnut hollow form

Old piece of Black Walnut that was cut down on a farm about 7 years ago. All the sap wood has rotted away. you can see one of the some of the remains of the sap wood in the lower section of it. Used Bodger Tools to do the main turning and then finish the hollowing with Robert Sorby Hollowmaster, that i recently purchased. Awesome tool.

Tip of the Triangle

I wanted to play how the angle of the bowl can change the shape of an inserted rectangle. It is a single block of walnut with two 90 channels cut out and then yellow heart rectangle glued in. Lots of things I will do different on the second version but it turned out ok.

Turned chess set

I had to make a chess board for my GCSE Resistant Materials exam and thought it would be a good idea to actually have chess pieces to go with it. The light chess pieces are made with maple and the dark chess pieces are made with walnut. I have only been turning around 6 months and this is my greatest achievement so far (I am 15). I have been watching your videos for quite a while now and your work is amazing. I probably wouldn’t of been able to do it without all the information that you have given me and everyone who watches your videos.
