Wood Turning

14″ Walnut (with Purple Heart Ring) Salad Bowl (my 4th every turning project

After 10 years out of the wood shop because of college then dental school I finally got back into the woodshop. I finally made time and thought I would start to learn wood turning. Just by watching youtube videos (yours and Frankl Horvath’s) over the last 2 weeks and turing three small maple bowls I thought I would give a large segmented bowl since I don’t have any rough turned bowls.

I think it turned out well being that its only my third bowl and learning/doing in two weeks.

I just used 5/8 bowl gouge, scraper, easywood chuck (w/ 1-3/8 jaws which were definitely undersized), and a relative’s lathe. I finished the bowl with beeswax and mineral oil.

Thanks for your videos. They gave a good foundation.

Christmas bell decroation

This is my first woodturned project. Started woodturning in the fall of 2014. Really enjoy using my new mini lathe and hope to expand my experience to sell my items at craft shows.

Misc Turned Bowls

The 3 center bowls are poplar firewood that I rescued from a client of mine.

The vase and box are from a piece of spalted maple that I turned for someone in exchange for some other pieces of maple. He plans on giving them to his dad as a present.

The other bowl is from a grab bag I picked up last time I was down at the woodcraft store.

Thanks for all your videos!! I learn so much from watching them and trying to make some of the things you make. Oh and then watching the video again to figure out what I’m doing wrong… lol

Ice Cream Cone

Hi Carl.

I’ve watch a lot of if not all of you videos. They are very interesting, entertaining and inspirational.

I watched you video “Ice cream on the lathe”. I made one of my own after seeing yours.

The chocolate sprinkles on the top are made from black walnut lathe chips. The cherry vanilla ice cream is made from flame box elder. the chocolate scoop of ice cream is made from black walnut. The cone is made from Banksia Nut.

I was trying to figure out what to make with the banksia and it came to me is looked like a waffle cone sort of.

I don’t have very much experience with the lathe. Its a 16″ Jet lathe. I have been making a few small things with it though. I am learning by watching your videos as well. One of the pictures I’m sending you shows a couple of my booboos with the ice cream cone. For whatever reason I thought I would hollow them out. The vanilla got hollowed a little to much as you can see in the picture. The chocolate came off the lathe and was sucked up into the dust collector that I had recently gotten. It kinda dinged it up a bit.
